Oh, mystery author! You are so very awesome to be giving me exactly what I asked for! The framework you set up with Violet being Hugo's fiancé and then wife is perfection: it raises the stakes on the “forbidden” aspect of the relationship to an incredible level, and it sets up your shocking twist that leads to their parting so painfully-perfectly. I’ll get to more on that later

This next thing just is quintessential Tateness to me because it combines his desire to find a soul-mate, which evidences one aspect of being damaged from being abandoned and thus feeling unwanted by his father and needing that validation combined with the paradox of his egomania almost from having been the recipient of his mother’s constant high praise even though she also messed him up terribly with his resulting hatred and murdering of her, but it also includes a perverse artistic eye as filtered through his penchant for violence:

“When I push for more, try to slip my hands up her shirt, she pulls away like she had been thunderstruck. Her face is flushed, eyes crazy with lust, and I notice with pride that her lip is bleeding from when I bit down on it earlier. Now we match, I think, licking my own bruised lip.”Yes, I did get all of that from the above quote because the first person narrative lets me intuit it, a prime example of "showing" and not "telling" that is very skillful and insightful characterization

Oh wow! This makes me so incredibly sad! But it was so well done! And I love picturing Vera as older Violet. I just hurt so much with Tate when he realized and knew she'd always choose Hugo over him. Just devastating. I loved it!
