I'm sitting in an internet cafe in Tunis. It's our last day here, and we've done almost everything in my guide book, so our only plans for this afternoon are this, getting tea (mmm, mint tea is so yummy) and buying books and/or cds. So, we're taking our time here now. Tunis has been pretty interesting. There's not a ton of interesting things in ( Read more... )

Tunisia is a pretty interesting place. It's been secular since independence, and quite feminist. The Islamic veil is banned from public buildings, so it wasn't necessary to dress in any particular way to blend in. I tried to cover up, and not wear particuarly tight clothes, but my friend I was traveling with doesn't seem to own any non-tight or low cut shirts. Which was possibly part of our problem...

As for French, everyone in the streets speaks Arabic, but everyone we ran into was able to speak French, with only one exception. When we went to buy tickets for the metro, we went to the wrong place (because it was also the only place we went where the signs weren't bilingual), and the guy didn't speak French, so the man behind me in line had to interpret. Other than that, no linguistic problems. Something funny, though, is that when we didn't respond to the men in the streets, they would try saying hello in English, Spanish, German, or Italian, thinking that we hadn't understood them...

I'm jealous! Other then the not blending in and responding to strangers business (seriously, why do people do that!? It's really sketchy and only adds to any uncomfortable attention!), it sounds like so much fun! Miss you!

OMG, serioulsy, we had a stalker. All because she answered this guy's question (after he had been following us, asking questions for about a block), and he wouldn't let us go. And we ran into him two other times, and the third time was completely on purpose, and he followed us to the hotel. And she complained about how you couldn't talk to people without feeling unsafe. Like, what country is the STREET the best place to meet people? Seriously.

But, all in all, it was pretty good!

Miss you too! *giant heart*
