Maya's Birth Story - A (Not Entirely) Surprise Unassisted Birth

Sep 03, 2011 18:10

After being sick for a week and a half, I was feeling much better on Sunday, August 28th. The family all worked together to get the house cleaned back up, more by necessity than any nesting urge. I had a feeling that the baby would come soon, since I was feeling good, finally had energy again, thought I might have lost my mucus plug that morning, ( Read more... )

Thank you! I'm feeling a lot better today, thanks! I think the BP meds must be working. I woke up feeling sick, but it was in my throat. No pounding headache today, no lack of energy, and I'm the right color. I hope it's something the meds fix completely! The MW said that if it doesn't stop in a few weeks or starts back up after I finish out the meds, there's a chance that I could develop chronic hypertension and have to stay on meds for good. I'm really hoping that doesn't happen!

It was very necessary! Little girl made a pretty fierce entry, but we were able to handle it all right.

Awesome story - I can't imagine having an unassisted birth!

(And if you don't mind me asking, what's with the "placenta in the fridge" thing? Is that for core blood?)

Thank you! I'm half tempted to just plan another unassisted if we ever have another (which probably won't happen, but you never know...). I just birth so fast, and it would save us a few thousand dollars. lol I was nervous at the thought it, but it went perfectly, and I had no fear at all while it was happening. Just praying that I wouldn't tear, which was my main concern.

My midwife does placenta encapsulation, so that's to keep it fresh until she can encapsulate it. That basically involves steaming it, cutting it up, drying it in a dehydrator, grinding it in a food processor or something similar, and putting it into pill capsules for the momma to take postpartum. I'd planned to try to do mine myself, but she offered to do ours for free since she missed the birth.

Okay, I had to look up placenta encapsulation as I'd never heard of that before. I guess if you're going to ingest placenta, pill form is the way to go! Did you do that with Eden and Ivy, too?

Nope, this is my first try. I've heard lots of mommas rave about it though. I did have some major problems with cramping after Ivy and had some ppd after both of them, so I figured it was worth trying. It's also supposed to be good for milk supply, lochia, and general energy after birth. Probably even more stuff than that. I just got mine back Friday, so I look forward to seeing how it goes!
