Brokeback Mountain - Regional tv ads different?

I recently read, in a probably old issue of Time Magazine, I think it was, that they were running different television ads for the film Brokeback Mountain in different parts of the country. They would tone down, way down, the homosexual aspects of the film in different parts of the country. I saw, repeatedly, ads for the film in the San Francisco,
