“Why did they do that?” Sigfastr sat against the tree, cuddled up as warmly as he could in the thick blankets they had salvaged. He shared them with Eilif and Eirny, and the three children were finally comfortable enough to start asking the questions the adults wanted to avoid.
“I saw Thorir there,” Eilif said in a small voice, “Did he kill Sigr’s parents?”
“I don’t think so,” Eirny cut in, “Thorir helped us get away. But he said the other men were bad.” She was the littlest of the sisters, and she barely had any memory of her big brother before he left, but she still looked up to him.
“I hope not.” Sigfastrs eyes filled with tears. “I didn’t see who did it. Mama hid me in the trunk and I only looked when Alfr was in the room.”
“We will find them,” Alfhildr promised, “And we will avenge your parents, and mine, and Eilif and Eirny’s brother.”
“Will he come back?” Eilif continued, “He said he would be back for us.”
“He will, but now you must try and sleep,” Edda soothed the children. Their world had been turned upside down, and no one could give them any answers as to why.
