It was the perfect spot - under the second willow tree, three rows to the left off the path by the river. It was exactly there that he’d first declared me his love - it was there, also, that we spent our first night together, under the stars.

I knew he would remember - I had given him enough clues and hints that he would find the token of my love, and convince me that he truly was the one. Deep in my heart, I knew - but I needed that extra reassurance, that what I was about to do was the right choice.
Pensively, I stood under the weeping branches, contemplating whether to leave the letter and the ribbon and hide somewhere in the bushes, or to just fasten it to the tree. After a moment, I decided on the latter and quickly hurried down the path, anxious for my beloved to find my words.

Only minutes later, I realized my mistake. I had never been down this way - I did not recognize a single tree or plant surrounding me, and I was very certain that the path had not been overshadowed by threatening branches, or winded down that far. I tried to look behind me, to where I came from, but my view was obscured by thick vegetation barring my return.

All I could do was walk forward - I stumbled and tripped, running faster and faster as it dawned on me that I was hopelessly lost, and that I had left my confession attached to the wrong tree. I tried to scream, but no sound came out of my mouth, and then I fell, smacking my head hard against a protruding root. Before the darkness engulfed me, I reached out, but all I could feel were cold leaves rustling and I heard the flora whisper to each other, claiming me.
