whose opinions does he respect -- how can circumstance turn them against him? Or should you save the openning scene for later in the story?

That makes me wonder if I'm starting too late in the story. We say "Start where everything changes for your character." Well, everything changed for this poor guy when he got werewolf-ized, right? The dead girlfriend is just icing on the cake at that point.
