As you know, Bob, I'm a huge Robert Downey Jr fan. I will go see him in a movie where he sits on a stool and reads the phone book for two hours. This is not a secret

So much this. For my money, Sherlock Holmes was one of the most nearly perfect movies I've ever seen, and as much as I've loved lots of other movies, I don't remember thinking that about any other films. Part of that was the Holmes/Watson banter, and the plot, and the general fun of it, and Mary and Irene both being awesome in different ways, but a lot of it was how unbelievably gorgeous and dirty and real the--well, I'd say sets, but it wasn't the sets, it was the entire atmosphere of the film. I'd have been happy to sit through 90 minutes of just that, never mind anything resembling plot. (Okay, maybe not, but still.) And part of that was because it was pretty much exactly the atmosphere I want to evoke in my, um, SF retelling of Oliver Twist except with some high-tech stuff which is a problem because I want exactly that atmosphere and I spent the whole film torn between "OMG this is the best thing ever I just want to eat it up and soak it in" and "I am never, ever going to be able to evoke this in my writing as well as I want to *

You'll get NO argument from me about the awesomeness of Sherlock Holmes (even though I haven't seen it ... yet). Several of my friends who have seen it multiple times keep coming back to the way Holmes and Watson engaged in the kind of banter which is reserved for those who are truly good friends. They also loved the look and "feel" of the movie, and they adored the soundtrack.
Needless to say, we were very unhappy when RDJ didn't get an Oscar nomination for Sherlock Holmes (I've been pissed with the Academy ever since Robert was robbed of the Best Actor Oscar he should have gotten for Chaplin). Also, three of my girlfriends have fallen for RDJ after seeing Sherlock Holmes. Now, if I can get them to watch Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang, I will have done my job. :)
One more thing... I remember mentioning somewhere that Sherlock Holmes would do quite well because of people going back to see it again, and I have no doubt that it will be a big seller when it makes its DVD/Blu-Ray debut at the end of next month.
