It really is. I don't suppose that writing a descent into madness is ever a pleasant exercise, but the things I'm coming up with in order drive him further along that path are...disturbing me.
I'm doing a bit of research on Post-Traumatic Stress to figure out how I'm going to work this. One of the things that jumped out at me was this line:

On a kinda related note, I actually have PTSD so if you'd like to discuss real life experiences, I'd be glad to. I'm not an expert by any means, but I'm more than willing to be open about what I have experienced.

My father, who had served in WWII and had suffered battle fatigue, the feared 'Thousand Yard Stare,' never suffered relapses, as far as I know, but always made a determined effort to avoid any reminder of his war time experiences.
I always wished that Whedon and company had examined the possibility of Buffy Summers experiencing a 'personality meltdown' in the wake of the events shown in 'Chosen'. It would certainly explain many of the Scoobies behavior during the final season of Angel.
