I have Irish ancestry as well, somewhere back in the dim and distant mists of time - it sits alongside the Norwegian and other bits that I don't even know about!
I'm really more German than anything, but the Irish part of my family was my maternal Grandfather's Dad and Grandparents and the culture of our family it heavily Irish/German. On my Dad's side it's Bohemian/German/French/Irish/yaddayaddayadda... A real mix. But we all know how close to *them* I am. ;-)
Here in Wisconsin we have a huge Norwegian culture but it's usually overwhelmed (festival-wise) by the Irish and German. Those three are the largest ancestral cultures (other than Native American) in our state. In recent decades there has been an enourmous Hmong immigration. I'm still trying to get the story about that?!?
I can't find the post, but didn't you say Italian? The Fitzmaurice's *claim* to be part of the Gherardini's of Florence (way back before Normandy) - So maybe we are cousins... ;-) I'll give you honorary status for the day.
My maiden surname comes from a Saxon name, and another relative has traced the line back to 1344 in Shropshire, England, which is pretty much where it's stayed until the mid part of the 20th century! I'm basically Anglo-Saxon with a few generous dashes of Welsh blood ;-)
Wow. Such stability leaves me in awe! Every line of my family immigrated within the last 200 years and most shuffled around quite a bit before and after. The Fitzmaurices were the most stable of the lot, but still... Wow!
Yes - It was practically a full time job for a little over 10 years. I'd leave work and go straight to the research library until 9 every night and back again on weekends. I love the research part more than anything! But when I lost Grandma Verona in 2001, and then my closest research cousin the next year, my spirit just crumbled into a million bits and I haven't really touched it since. I go through short spurts of starting it all up again but the past couple of years I've been so absorbed in my fan sites, I don't find a lot of time. I had just gotten to a fairly 'dead end' point in my research anyway which made it all the easier to stop. Now, a few years later, there are a lot more records appearing online so it's quite possible my dead ends might have more possibilities than before.
