I'm still having a blast reasearching symbols for my
winchestmidwest presentation and thought I would give a sneak peak on what may have been the beginings of the devil's trap:
The idea of a devils trap may have originated with these Babylonian devil bowls, sometimes called magic bowls.
Some are spiraled in hopes to lure the demon to the bottom of the bowl with something that will bind it there.
In this bowl the bound male demons have their hands tied, their feet are chained
-- a clear sign of what the bowl itself was meant to achieve.
Bowls are often positioned face-down, and in some cases two bowls were glued together with pitch, the space enclosed between them containing such items as inscribed egg-shells or human skull fragments. These were demon traps, meant to lure, trap, and disable any malevolent demons, preventing them from hurting humans or causing damage to property.
They were also used as aggressive instruments aimed at sending the demons upon an enemy's head, buried next to the intended’s home.
Aren't they beautiful?! The process of burying it upside down to keep the demon trapped is so very intriguing! I wonder what someone would do if they found a bowl buried in their yard. Would they destroy it? Use it? Was there ritual involved?
So facinating....
