Hmmm. Maybe Capitalist Cows. I didn't go into МакДональдс but I doubt they were serving McRibs in St. Petersburg. Apparently that МакДональдс has been bombed twice in protest of capitalism, however.
Ah yes. The omnipresent golden arches. At least they're more discreet in other countries than the US. We have one here in the historical centre of Sevilla and it's really hard to distinguish as a McD's if you're not paying attention.
I think we actually went to the one in Seville. You're right. It's very unobtrusive.
I've seen MacDonald's in all sorts of unfortunate plac3es. There's one behind the Luxor Temple in Egypt. There's one right on the Place du Innocents in Paris. There weren't many in China, but I did see a couple (outside of Shanghai, which doesn't count.) Happily, the Chinese did expell Starbucks from the Forbidden City.
We have many McD's in Seville but the two that are in the historical centre have had to conform to what the rules are for publicity and signs with the centre and they're fairly stringent, thank goodness. It reminds of one in Rome (or is that one a Burger King? Not that it matters) very near the Spanish Steps. It's also very well disguised among the history. :)
Resistance is futile. I generally don't go into foreign MacDonald's but two years ago I couldn't resist stopping by one in Germany to get a Big Mac and a McBrew.
