A while back I was gathering books about tea rooms (I love the very concept of tea rooms) and came across one by Jan Whitaker called TEA AT THE BLUE LANTERN INN. It's a social history of the tea room, with one of the best cover designs I've seen in ages ( Read more... )

I've always been intimidated by tea rooms, so I've never had tea in one. Not one in a department store, anyway. Obviously, I don't know what I have missed. I do remember, however, having lunch in the downtown Lazaus in Columbus, OH when we went to shop. My mother made us put our Sunday best on, including dresses.

One of my favorite memories of my time in London was a High Tea outing - I don't think it was at Harrods, but it was wonderful and introduced me to clotted cream and Devonshire cream and the scones to go with it, and we could watch all the activity on the street from our window while we enjoyed the various dainties.
