The harsh smell of ozone from the secondary explosions had finally permeated the entire city; corridors were on fire and equipment was shooting sparks that were reminiscent of the Fourth of July fireworks he remembered as a kid. the floor shuddered as another piece of the city collapsed into itself, and the din of voices as people rushed to evacuate was barely heard over the constant rumble of raging battle in the skies above. John didn't know how things had spiralled so out of control; they were still trying to figure out how the hell the Replicators had slipped under the radar was beyond him, and as far as he could tell it was beyond the scientists, as well.

Either way, the Lanteans were unprepared for the onslaught, and they barely had time to begin evacuation. As it was, John was certain that more than half the expedition was now cut off from any hope of making it to the Control Tower, and the stream of bodies that he was helping to direct was rapidly thinning out. When the last of the Expedition members filed past him, John waited a half a second longer, just in case, before falling in behind her and running to the Embarkation Room. The shimmering blue puddle swallowed each body greedily, though John sprinted in the opposite direction and took the stairs two at a time.

Once in the Control Room, he had to physically grab Elizabeth by the shoulders and yank her away from the consol she was hunched over. She shot him a dirty look, which he ignored and instead pushed her in the direction of the Stargate. John watched as Rodney, Teyla and Ronon jumped into the event horizon, followed by Chuck, Amelia and Zelenka. John and Elizabeth were five steps away from doing the same when a direct hit to the Tower knocked them down. Amidst the falling debris, John hauled Elizabeth to her feet and the pair lurched as they tried to regain their footing. A quick glance upwards as a loud crash sounded above them, and John knew that the last thing he would feel would be the impact of his hands against Elizabeth's back, and the image that would carry him into darkness would be her body being enveloped by the Stargate's portal.

John Sheppard felt oddly at peace as darkness overcame him; he had gotten his friends to safety and that was all that mattered.
