Dear Person,

One clip is not enough to justify your assertion that Sixties companions = screamers. Maybe they are 'best known for their lung power' but that's only because of That Stupid Stereotype.

You're making me remember Paul Parsons, Person. Stop that nowTo those that actually bother to watch anything broadcast in black and white, they are ( Read more... )

Another one?
...Do people forget Barbara running over those Daleks in The Dalek Invasion of Earth, and her sheer awesome in The Aztecs? Do they forget Zoe beating the crap out of the Karkus in The Mind Robber?
And Polly being awesome as a whole, of course. We can't forget the awesome Polly.

...Yeah, I have a lot of arguments on this subject. It's fun.

Last time, I rambled about the Doctor Who C2s on ff.net. Or do you mean two posts in as many hours?

Maybe they are simply unaware, having never seen any Classic Who. Maybe they do forget. Or maybe it's simply that the awesome is, in their heads, cancelled out by the fact they're 'weak' enough to scream sometimes.

Anyone holding this viewpoint has, in my opinion, never actually watched Classic Who (because I simply can't conceive of anyone actually watching the stories and coming away with this idea). Therefore their view is uninformed and therefore not worth arguing with ( ... )

Just... another thing about Sixties companions being useless screamers. I had an argument with my dad about it, who's one of those 'Rose was the first good companion' guys.

They probably watched up to the first scream and turned it off... which still makes no sense, really. I guess some people just think a screamer is an weakling, no matter how much awesome they exude. Which is hell for companions like Polly and Dodo, of course.

It's a neverending circle of stupidity, fail and awesome apparently being negated by a tendency to scream.
Sometimes, this fandom makes me want to hurt people.

Polly is so, so, so awesome and although she does make coffee and scream, she also kills Cybermen and takes names. She's glorious and saves the day and Ben is frequently the one requiring rescuing.

And even when she made coffee, it was often for ulterior purposes, like making the Men In Charge think she was a Harmless Female and then she could stick around and take notes and help save the day from the inside. SO AWESOME. ♥

Jesus fucking Christ. Why they can't watch the ACTUAL FUCKING SHOW is beyond me.

....Dude, I watched The Moonbase. (Er, well, and listened.) Polly kicked ass in it. While comforting bedridden Jamie and ignoring Ben's ignorant-if-well-meant chivalry.

I hate people coming to daft, offensive conclusions like this, please tell me people knocked some sense into them or else I'm gonna have to do it and my blood pressure does not need that crap.

*breathes* I'm done.

Wait, no, I'm not. Someone should also link them to that awesome vid of girl companions kicking ass.

I hate that stereotype. I haven't seen all of the First or Second Doctor episodes but I've seen enough to know that Barbara kicked so much freaking ass it's not even funny. And Polly and Zoe both come to mind as well as being generally awesome characters who could hold their own. And you're right, screaming is totally understandable.

You know, every time I run into one of Those People, it always turns out they don't actually *know* any of the sixties companions. Because, hi, Awesome. Obv Babs is my Favorite Ever and I am biased, but she is hardly the only Awesome female sixties companion. They may have screamed sometimes -- when the situation called for it, usually -- and yes, Susan had weak ankles, but DUDE. Rose? Martha? Donna? THEY SCREAMED TOO. That doesn't negate awesomeness, it just means there are some things that will make you scream in shock, fear, or OMGWTF.
