Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

I just finished reading the fourth Harry Potter book and I am blown away by how good it is. I had not regarded it as one of my favorites, but I am more impressed with Rowling's writing in this one than any of the rest.

The book begins in the town of Little Hangleton, and the way she describes the murders of the Riddle family and the suspicion ( Read more... )

Yeah, I kinda thought the dialogue started to slip as the books went on, too. "Hurried" is a pretty good description. It almost seemed like there was so much action going on that she couldn't spend time on conversation, and of course that gets even more truncated in the movies. Pity.

Yes-the movie dialogue can be so disappointing. I was watching the second movie last night (idly, I was doing other things on the computer) and I was reminded by how much I hate when Harry says, "Hang on." It's so clumsy, and I think it's part child-actor, part director, and part script. It doesn't seem natural. I think the actings, scripts, and direction have most certainly improved, but there is still a painful lack of humor.

Oh god yeah, the acting from the kids in the first few movies is so clumsy! It's nice that they have gotten better. I would really like to see another director take over. I think mistakes like the ones you mentioned could really be improved by a good director (and maybe editor), you know?

yeah, that final scene between harry and voldemort--which i've obviously read a number of times now--doesn't do the other books justice. There's no long dialogue when they're in the ministry in book 5. A novel I wrote in 12th grade did that...after the character had been shot, he has this long 3 page conversation with the guy who shot him...haha. My teacher wrote "a long monologue when he's dying..."

miss you! still have a paragraph or two to add to that letter, and then i'll send it!

When I read the books the first time, the 4th was by far my favorite. I liked reading this review.
