Oh great deities! Don't let my beloved city become a Creole Disneyland! I would like to see the heart and soul of the city return. The t-shirt shops and all the other kitchy tourist blights are NOT the soul of this place. New Orleans is the great neighborhood po-boy shop. New Orleans is the buzz of conversation at a crawfish boil. New Orleans is the scent of thousands of crape myrtles blowing on the breeze. New Orleans is the raft of barges being pushed up river by a hard-working tugboat and crew. New Orleans is the story of how your mother met your father when she and your aunties used to dance at a certain ballroom. New Orleans is the night you sat along the lakefront watching meteors and drinking shnapps. New Orleans is the shopkeeper who knows you on sight. New Orleans is a state of mind.
