“So what are you hoping our 150,004th year on Earth will bring, Gaius?” Six asked as they pushed through the throng of people amassed in Times Square.
He stopped and pushed his novelty glasses onto the top of his head as Six looked down at him imperiously. She’d clucked at him when he nicked the “2013” glasses from a vendor’s cart and tucked his dark wraparound shades away into his breast pocket. He insisted on wearing the ridiculous things anyway. “To better blend in,” he’d said, offhandedly. She hadn’t felt the need to point out that they “blended in” no matter what they were wearing-- her red dress would probably stop traffic, if people could see her-- but she secretly loved it when he didn’t take himself so seriously.
“The same thing I hope for every year,” he said, eyes locking with hers.
“Five more of me, so you can have a harem of Six?” she asked mockingly. “I know you miss it, Gaius. What did Roslin call it? Your nymph squad.”
“Darling, we’ve been through this,” he huffed. “One of you is entirely sufficient.”
“So what is it you want, then?” she pressed. “Other than me, of course.”
“I want--” he starts walking again, and looks around him as if he’s just noticing the crowd for the first time ”--another year in which these people refrain from annihilating themselves and this very pleasant planet.”
“How noble,” she drawled.
He shrugged and linked his arm through hers. “So tell me, then, what you want to see happen this year.”
“What I want,” she said with a delighted smile, leaning down so she could speak softly in his ear, even though no one could hear them, “is you, and a big bed, and a glass house on a lake. We can remind each other of what it feels like to be alive, really alive.”
He looked up at her with a lecherous grin and wrapped an arm around her waist. “I love living.”
