Yoga

So, I was avoiding yoga for a while... not for any good reason, more because yoga, like medicine, is good for me.  And, much like any good human, I sometimes avoid what's good for me.

I've been really inspired by marinatempest gathering her stuff together to do The Yoga Center of Columbia's teacher training program.  It's exciting for me because I'm really ( Read more... )

Aww thanks! I'm such a little yoga geek! I totally understand putting off the training. I was at that point last year. I just knew it wasn't the right time.

Anyway, three favorite stress relieving poses of the day:
1. Intense Side Stretch. This is the one that gets that one spot in my hips and outer thigh that is ALWAYS tight.
2. Shoulderstand. This one was actually hard for me for a long time. Like many people, I hold a lot of tension in my neck and upper back, and this feels sooo gooood. I also like Plow for the same reason.
3. Thread the Needle. I couldn't find this in YJ. From Table (hands/knees), move one hand to center, drop the other shoulder and feed your arm under your supporting shoulder, palm up. This is a really nice, gentle twist.

Yay for yoga!

ooh I LOVE thread and needle. The gals at Yama Studio are IN LOVE with it.

You know, the dork in me keeps wanting to buy a Shiva Rea Yoga Trance Dance DVD... hmmm delightful

I like the Sun Salutation. I do it really slow at first to stretch everything out, then quickly to get the blood flowing. Good times!

I love finding great music and doing my sun salutations. For the past few years, I find that The Cinematic Orchestra is my hands down BEST sun salutation music. It's so funky, jazzy, rhythmic and chill.

what's your favorite sun salutation move? mine is coming up into the lunge. It feels like I'm some big tiger stretching out like RAAAAAAAAAR.

ok i'm weird.

Gotta admit, I love the dolphin. I have issues stretching my back out and that one just feels so good! I feel like a cat waking up from a nap.

I love reclining virasana. Tt's a relaxing pose in that there isn't much brute strength involved, and it opens up all of my stress holders: my chest and hip flexors, mainly. And I do like shoulderstand, but only from plow pose. But anything that forces me to open up the heart chakra area is a good one for me.
