Hughes doesn’t normally see the nature around him. Things are what they are and unless they’re useful, he’s not interested.

But tonight he steps out of his car and notices the moon. It’s right between a gap between two buildings, the corner of a sign jabbing into it’s center, obscuring most of the dark sliver that keeps it from being completely full. It doesn’t cast enough light to be noticeable underneath all the light of the city, but Hughes finds himself thinking its presence adds a sense of timelessness to what he’s doing: warning someone that’s he been caught breaking the law. Men have been doing it since there was a law to break and the moon has probably seen most of it as shady things like this tend to happen at night.

Peter is a good man. And it doesn’t matter if tonight makes Hughes the most recent in a long line of accomplices on dark nights stretching back centuries. There are times when the law casts its nets too wide and catches a good man.

Hughes steps forward. The moon disappears behind a building.
