So I wore myself out at Anime Boston a bit more than I realized, which is why this con report is delayed. Here's a rough reconstruction of how things went:
These animators understand that the sinking of the Titanic was A Thing That Happened, right? Not just a popular Anglo-American romance film?
Or is this just another case of cartoon studios whitewashing pop culture and history because Kids Are Dumb? (See also: The Mighty Kong, Pocahontas and its sequel)
I would like to believe that it's generally known about the Thing That Happened status of the Titanic disaster? But, uh, gah, who knows? Believe it or not, there's an aspect of the movie I didn't talk about which seriously makes me wonder whether this, or the Titanic/Ranma crossover where the boat doesn't even sink, is the more respectful treatment of the tragedy.
