[Hakoda has founds something to keep him occupied. What that happens to be is gutting luggage. Some of them are fortunate enough to be made of tough fabrics, including leather, which makes them very handy. So with the use of a sharpened knife from the kitchen and scissors he was fortunate enough to find, he's on Deck Twelve, skinning luggage and ( Read more... )

What sort of machines do you speak of?

The machines on our door, the communicators we use, even the lights in our rooms. We have none of these things where I'm from.

There is nothing this advanced where I am from, either. It has certainly been an experience.

[She HATES elevators.]

[He doesn't really mind the elevators or technology at all. It's fascinating, really.]

So, that means I'm not the only one. Good to know. Sometimes it gets lonely thinking you're the only one who doesn't know what a 'light bulb' is.

Machines? Like the elevators and all? They're pretty common where I'm from, yeah. We don't have the comms...we have something like them, though, or most people do. I did.

[Tan's cellphone was awesome; it had Tetris.]

If not comms, what were they?

Cellphones. They're not the same, but..pretty similar, I guess? You could call people with them or take pictures or send messages through text. Well, I couldn't. I didn't have a text-- a text service on mine. But it's possible to do.

[Most of this goes entirely over his head.]

So very similar, then.

I'm not sure you qualify as a machine, Ironhide.

[He snorts, amused.]

Good. You learned that faster than most.

[Hakoda would say that about any talking machine though. You may mistake his ignorance for wisdom, if you like.]

Others aren't as observant?

A lot of the technology on this ship is similar to what I had back home. Nothing like deck 20, though, but the rest is stuff we could have done.

Its kind of odd to think that so many people aren't familiar with things I've taken for granted all my life.

[He hasn't really explored Deck 20, but he's vaguely aware of what it is.]

Taken for granted in what way?

ntjstapwn July 12 2010, 20:22:49 UTC
Well, we've always had things like indoor plumbing and electric lights and phones and computers. I know parts of my world didn't have them, but I never lived without them so I never even considered what it was like not to do so.

It's taken some time just to get used to all of these strange machines.

Some of it is different. Some of this shit I could make. Wouldn't be as smooth, but smooth is for wimps.

That's impressive. It would take me awhile to work out how these things operate. [But it would be something to do.]

To be honest, I mostly made things that exploded.

But I could make a mean clock-work robot too....

[This is an interest that pings him. He hasn't been able to find the usual components for the bombs he's made before.]

Have you made anything like that here?
