Interesting, especially as I had a discussion at BRC this year with someone about how part of my definition of why BRC was not a utopia was that it hadn't worked out how to deal with code transgressions without relying on external authorities.

Are there other ways you can think of that burn communities can use to deal with this stuff?

And ps: when is Burning Flipside? As my honey and I are planning on driving from NYC to New Orleans and back to SF in the next few months, I've suggested we add Austin to the agenda as I want him to meet you (and an excuse to spend more time!)

indeed, we were speaking last night about relationships between different tribes that do not follow the same codes... and mention was made of the situation, which we understand is often experienced in places like Australia, or really in any areas on the frontiers of two cultures which operate with different rules/codes/taboos encounter one another.

speaking of which, I highly recommend this book:
On Racial Frontiers: The New Culture of Frederick Douglass, Ralph Ellison, & Bob Marley, by Gregory Stephens.

PS Burning Flipside is over Memorial Day weekend, at the very end of May... Mischievia, the North TeXas Burn, is Oct. 4-8... and Maker Faire is Oct. 20-21 ( ... )

Back when I used to go to pagan festivals back in the 1980s, most women had her athame on her hip, even if she was skyclad. Once in a while, a woman used it. Real easy to identify the guy when he has a slash on his chest and is dripping blood.

Although I prefer alternative forms of self-defense when possible (duct-taping people to a tree works, sometimes), I understand that there are unfortunately a number of situations in which effective violence is absolutely necessary.

During Orfunner @ The RecPlant this year, when a couple of guys with a taser threatened her & a number of our friends, heatherthegreat whacked one of the guys & sent them running. The assailants threatened to return with a .357, so the decision was made to call the sheriff.
