today, i'm looking for a new computer for Flipside... to run A/V backup for flash mobs @ the Effigy!
i will need a video card with probably not less than 512MB of RAM & i would prefer to get an external hard drive with not less than 500 gigs of storage space.
i'm about to go over to Laboratory Computers, unless anyone else has a better idea...

file sharing, pyropolis, video, electronics, daft, flipside, media, effigy, audio, circuit bending, burn culture, burning flipside

I've got a fairly decent employee discount via HP and can get you HP products fairly easily.

What exactly do you need video-wise? Did you mean 512MB of system RAM or 512MD of video card memory?

I can get you the following system for $400 delivered:

http://www.shopping.hp.com/shopping/data_sheet/ex318aa.html

It comes with a 200GB SATA drive and standard onboard video, however it would be quite easy to install a larger drive and/or more powerful video card on your own once you've gotten the system. Fry's sells components very competitively.

Let me know what your more specific parameters are (like, your budget) and I can see what else I might be able to dredge up.

wow... that's awesome!
i was hoping to spend between $700-900
from what I understand, the video card itself needs a ridiculous amount of RAM for me to do any video mixing.
i have a friend who is trying to tempt me to buy a Mac; and although I imagine it would probably be a more robust option... the price may be prohibitive.

Ah, so this will be for video editing and mixing as well, eh? Mac might be a good option but will be far more expensive than a horsepower equivalent PC solution ( ... )

After running some numbers, I came up with the following system I can assemble for you for $700 total:

Compaq Presario Media Center SR1920NX PC (plus custom installed components)
• AMD Athlon 64 3500+ processor (2.2GHz)
• Genuine Windows XP Home
• 1GB PC-3200 SDRAM
• 500GB SATA hard drive
• Double-layer DVD±R/RW with LightScribe
• Radeon X1650 512MB GDDR2 PCI Express x16 Video Card
• 9-in-1 digital media card reader

Lemme know if you wanna do that and I'll order all the pieces, assemble it and you can test it with your software before you buy.
