Woe, all good things must come to an end: I had to put trinityofone on a plane back to California today. My fun is over, and the real world resumes tomorrow, when I send out some more letters asking people to please hire me to teach their students about medieval stuff next year ( Read more... )

Boothbay Harbour (you must put the "u" in it to match the sign) in the mid '70's gave me one of the most enduring memories I still cherish.

My sister Judith wanted to go to Maine for reasons that escaped my teenaged mind at the time - I mean, outside of L.L.Bean it was bo-o-oring. We stayed in Boothbay Harbour in a hotel that's restaurant was under renovation (to my family's annoyance) their swimming pool was salt water and unheated (to my annoyance) and Mother's blood pressure medication made her over-sensitive to the sun, which ruined the harbor tour (to her annoyance ( ... )

What a beautiful memory! It's so funny how kid (especially teenaged) memories are, on one hand, filled with a strange mixture of "oh my god this is LAME get me out of here!" and "oh, WOW." I remember when we went on this road trip to the Appalachians and Smokies one year when I was 14 or so. 99% of the time I loathed it, but one day we climbed up Mt. Lecomte in the Smokies, and just for a moment the clouds thinned out so we could look across the endless file of the mountains--something very new for kids who'd spent their lives in a very flat state.

Then the clouds closed up the view, and I went back to being sullen and resentful :D
