He indeed doesn't look anything like GDL. Good Lord, I was one of the ranters and I never even saw that. I do say he was meant as a substitute for him... here's the new toy, Jack, run along and be happy.

I was a bit daft and dared to have a peek into some of the comms. I didn't stay long.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and I have no doubt that Uncle Rusty did mean for Alonso to be a Ianto substitute in some way at least, but to say it was a personal dig at Janto fans and that the only reason they used Alonso is because he looks like Ianto which makes it even *more* of a personal dig at Janto fans (apparently) is just eye boggling.

I am sitting on the fence somewhere between your view and K-gal's view with a significant bias in your direction, but that's because I'm a Ianto fan and I have to wear a different head to be happy with Jack-the-bastard.

I've never seen "Jack the bastard" and IMO it takes a special way of looking at people to telescope "happy go lucky interstellar slut" into "the kind of bastard that doesn't care whether his lovers live or die and picks up another one at the drop of a hat". As much as I can't understand people who think of Ianto as "incidental" to the story, when until the end of the second series they had gone out of their way to imply he was very central to it. But Jack and Ianto are blank screens and everyone can project on them. I often read descriptions of what people think they saw and wonder whether I was watching the same show

I don't see Jack as Jack-the-bastard naturally (hence the comment about having to wear a different head) but I can see why some people may choose to interpret him as that even though I think they're way off base. It makes for some interesting discussions at times but I am perfectly capable of behaving like an adult and agreeing to disagree.

I think one gets the idea of my natural inclinations as to how I view Jack and Ianto very clearly through my fic. *g*

They're both twenty-something white males... but that's about as far as it goes! Alonso isn't a replacement for anyone, any more than Ianto was a replacement for Estelle or real!Jack. Characters, as you say, are separate entities (with separate names!), not indivisible parts of some chimeric pairing-monster.

I loved that little scene - after all that time panicking whenever Jack said hello to anyone, the Doctor's parting gift is an introduction! :) Entirely appropriate. And it's good to see Jack smile again - we don't know if this is at the start of his healing process or near the end, but it's lovely to see him cheer up on-screen. He's had a hard time of it lately but this lets the viewers know that he will recover, and that's great.

(to be honest, the accidental loss of yet another lover would seem likely to be very much secondary in Jack's mind to that whole "choosing to actively sacrifice his own grandson in front of a screaming Alice" thing! That's the loss that I immediately think of with CoE - Ianto's was rather

It was day 5 CoE that had me distraught, not day 4, even though I was really upset about Ianto so I'll go with you regarding Steven's loss and its effect on Jack (though I am going to disagree about Ianto being incidental, but hey, each to their own).

The thing with name smushing makes me shudder. We didn't do it to Kirk/Spock, Paris/Kim, Jim/Blair, Mulder/Krychek et al back in the day so why now? Argh!

With you utterly on smushing, but I'm just dipping a tentative toe in the Moonlight fandom and I discovered one that makes me smile. Dunno if you're familiar, but the main pairing in the show (tho as always not necessarily in the fic!) is Mick and Beth, and this has been smushed to McBeth! XD

That would make me grin secretly (as I do with Gwack, but for different reasons) but I'd still have to grumble about it on principle.
