Female Characters, Why Have They Regressed?

Sep 21, 2010 11:18

I have been experiencing a major disappointment and even dislike of a lot of the current batch of female characters in books and TV. sartorias  explained a good portion of my dissatisfaction over here. My comment/rant grew too long and too ranty to inflict on someone else's post so...

Television is going to be about the sexy, and right now, male styles are for the loose, and women's styles are for the tight. When I was young, men wore tight pants, and women granny dresses. Or mini skirts and bell bottoms.

I figure any show is going to have the clothes cut for maximum attraction--even uniforms. (The fashion that I wish, I WISH would Go Away is the four-day stubble on guys. Ew, ew, ew.)

I do remember the seventies look (ick ;-), my teens and twenties fell in the 80's mostly). The current M/F fashion trends are years old now and not fair. I want gender equal tight and skimpy or no one in tight and skimpy. Actually, I think I wouldn't notice women's clothing as much if we weren't constantly looking down her cleavage, ya know?

Yeah, TV uniforms fit waaaay better than any uniform I ever wore.

OMG! Yes, I sincerely dislike the four-day stubble look. I want to yell, "You look scruffy (in a bad and not at all sexy way), go shave for crying out loud!"

I wish I hd TV that concentrated on women's arses and boobs as they wear skimpy clothes. Unfortunately, on my side of the Equator we just get shows aimed squarely at women. All these cooking shows and 'talent' contests...

To a certain extent it comes down to the actors. What are you going to do with some of the women actors these days except focus on their tits and arse? Tits and arse are all they have!

Have you got any examples of the sort of thing you mean? I would've said Scully in 'The X Files' was a good female character, but of course she's now sixteen years old. What about whatsername Hargitay in whichever 'Law and Order' she's in? Is that even still on?

Couldn't agree mnore about the four-day stubble. If you can't grow a beard, learn to shave.

Cooking shows and talent shows aren't aimed at this woman, I don't enjoy those shows much ( ... )

Amen.

I have to tell you that I had screenwriting seminars where the teachers specifically said Hollywood was male dominated and that they were interested in featuring white men in the leading roles. All the movies were geared to that...including male interests.

However, it's interesting that the screenplay I almost sold (to a male buyer) had a female main character.

I seriously don't like the way most women are portrayed in urban fantasy. They fit into that strong women = bitch role, and I don't like that.

Why can't people write strong female characters as people...not a sex object or a bitch?

Of course, keep in mind that there ARE women who like to read women as bitches and romance object books.

That's it exactly. Why can't they be real women, you know, regular people who happen to be women ( ... )

I stopped watching regular tv because of a lot of these issues. And the only way you are going to get the kind of female character in novels you are talking about, is to look to small press.

I haven't watched a lot of regular TV for a few years now either but occasionally I'll surf by and have a look in. This is why I think it has been such a shock to me with the blatant T&A in shows now.

With novels I've been enjoying reading women Aussie authors lately. In fact, I'm just finishing The King's Bastard by Rowena Cory Daniels (who wouldn't also happen to be you now would she?).
Alas, the poor women are all kept down by the male dominated society but I'm liking the story anyway.

Lol, well I thank you for the compliment, but I rather suspect that wonderfully talented Ms Daniel's extremely grateful she looks nothing like me *g* I wholeheartedly agree with you in enjoying her writing though.

One of the things I really disliked with the Star Trek movie, was them making Uhura so romantically focussed on Spock. I know it was an alternate reality tale, butthat one really threw me,

I read her bio and she said she had six kids and so I wondered, six kids not being all that common these days. :-)

I agree with Uhura crushing on Spock being really weird and a bit of a shock. Frankly, I just couldn't see it. Sort of like I don't get why the fanfic folks pair Hermione and Snape. WTH? Ew!
