I hear everyone talk about various cons but they don't always provide the details like the when and the where and the focus. I would like to make a Con list providing the name, location, approx date and what the focus is of these cons. Reading my flist this morning I see that DragonCon is this coming weekend but where is it and what kind of con is ( Read more... )

I'll add that, thanks.
Even the Con websites kinda suck at providing location, I'm guessing it is in Albany, NY?

I'm a Northwest coaster born and raised so the first thought to cross my mind was Albacon=Alberta, Canada. ;-)

Locus keeps a pretty substantial list: http://www.locusmag.com/Resources/Conventions.html

ValhallaCon! Right here in Bellingham, next week. Science and literature-oriented. www.valhallacon.com

Thanks! Do you know if ValhallCon is establishing itself on Labor Day weekend or it it still finding its feet?

I like that it is now more of a summer con than when it used to be in, like, February. *brrr* :-)

I believe the plan is to change weekends but remain a summer convention. It certainly makes more sense to me to do it when it's nice here -- much better incentive for people to come.

Yes, it makes sense to me too.

Orycon 31 is a general interest SF convention -- self-styled as Oregon's premier science fiction convention. Despite the hideous web page, it's usually a good convention.

Australian cons include Conflux (Canberra - lots of stuff for writers, stuff for fans and artists, the historical banquet, the online Minicon etc) - Minicon is today this year (I have been *so* waiting to say that) and COnflux itself is in early October. The banquet theme this year is Lake Charles LA in 1883. http://conflux.org.au/forum/index.php?board=8.0 is MInicon and conflux.org.au is the con itself.

Continuum - Melbourne. A terrific and friendly general interest con. Lots of emphasis on books, but from a fan persepctive. There's one in February ( earlier than usual because Melbourne's also hosting the next Worldcon)

Swancon - Perth. It has a great reputation, but I've never been there.

FEmmecon - Perth's feminist convention. Again, I don't know much about it, since it's 3000 miles away.

I can't remember any more than that

Added, in your own section too. Thanks!

I can't find the web addy for FEmmecon though, is there one? Maybe listed under a different name?

That could be because I have the name wrong (is it Gynecon?) or it might be because it has no website. I'm pretty sure I have the name wrong, though.
