err, yea, sorry, limited-appeal post. but i figured after darcydodo make random references to the same system that i thought was utterly obscure, i'm allowed to follow suit
but it's actually not that far from your domain -- LaTeX, which you may've heard from your favorite geog grad student, is a very robust system for typesetting technical papers, particularly strong with math formulas, and TikZ is an enormously powerful and enormously complicated add-on to make really pretty technical diagrams for said papers (at cost of one's sanity in the course of learning it)
