Connor feels it the moment it starts: there is a reason Luke does his 'speeches' to people who are asleep, REM stage means their minds are open.

Easy for him to step inside and reach for Annabelle, but easy to make a mess if he is not careful.

It is past. Happened, but is not happening. You are safe. He lets the words echo, and touches the most recent real memory of Annabelle's: going to sleep in her room, watched over by him.

A vague feeling of recognition and confusion.

The dream shudders like a soap bubble about to burst, but Annabelle hasn't quite broken free yet. The memory skips forward a bit in time...

Annabelle is still strapped to the table, gasping for air. At least she's no longer being drained, for the moment. A male voice, it's tone faintly interested, speaks.

"The yield is still higher than standard, but A-2-3a seems to be developing a tolerance to the serum." There is the sound of a pen scratching on paper. "If we double the dose we ought to be able to keep it alive for at least a few more sessions. I'd like more data from it before we do the terminal drain and autopsy..."

Oh, now it gets serious.

He will no change the memories, no, but there is a screech of pain... coming from the scientists.

The mental image is a gift for Annabelle: a flare of violet light, and the torturers are having their spines pulled out, one vertebra at a time. Something like this is what they deserved. It takes a long time for the bastards to stop screaming.

I am here Annabelle. You are safe.

The mental image breaks the grip of the memory. Connor. Relief, affection and gratitude tag along with that one word.

Iverson was the one who was speaking, the fellow in charge. I don't know exactly what happened to him, other than the fact that Michael...dealt with him, permanently. When someone with super-human strength decides to really hurt someone....
