Reflections while studying for an exam

My grandparents live in a small town in the mountains of Virginia. I lived there briefly as a child and saw it as beautiful and pastoral surrounded by the Appalachians which i lovingly thought of as "my blue mountains." Most of my youth was spent in cities. not so much urban areas, but those urban artifacts that folks brought with them to the original suburbs and held aloft as civilized urban values. you don't find wal-mart in the downtown of any city, and anyone that lives in the city proper is hard-pressed to get to one. the suburbanites of a generation or two ago liked conspicuous consumption and whitewashed communal products, and they had little use for corner stores like you see in the first floor of highrises. i almost wonder if moving to the center of chicago or new york might not bring me closer to life the way it used to be. believe me, i'm from the "heartland," and they don't give a fuck. it's sad.

you were right about the Walmart. The North East Corridor is beginning to prove that wrong as well.
