i sung a version of this in high school chorus. it had a pretty melody. similar version to what yo-yo ma (and the rest of the group- all of whom i didn't recognize) played at obama's inauguration. i thought it was a really cool selection for the inauguration, actually. traditionally american (i think it's a quaker piece) without a hint of that asinine jingoistic faux news post 911 armchair patriotism.
Its a Shaker dance song and it was written by an Elder from Alfred, Maine. It got popular with Aaron Copland's Appalachian Spring ballet.
I have always found that true religious or patriotic calling does not offend me - the rest, well, I hope they choke on their commemorative flaming twin tower fat Jesus hamburgers.
