Too long since I did a book post!

May 25, 2015 18:18

I have not done a book post since August 2! I have probably forgotten books-I didn't realize it was that long. But here's what I can remember or still find lying around because I haven't put it (back) on a shelf yet.

I try to keep spoilers at a minimum (with one exception, properly warned below), and I welcome discussion and questions!

Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore has been sitting on my shelf for awhile now. Glad to hear it's good. I was a little skeptical depending on who was trying to summarize it for me but I'm looking forward to giving it a go.

I think that book resists summary.

[notes down first two novels as is always looking for interesting new authors]

[Edit] and the Robin Sloane.

I loved Ancillary Justice and its sequel; I'd recommend both to anyone who likes SF. Fascinating universe and characters.

Ancillary Sword is in my To Read pile. Soon, I hope!

To clarify, I found it about as intrusive as you did ("Wait, let me re-read that scene"). After the realization that the predominance of females was a linguistic, not evolutionary, phenomenon, my response was more, "Yeah, yeah, I get it; I'm so sorry I'm a white male hegemonist." Then I got over that (I think I'm generally good at getting over things).

I definitely look forward to Ancillary Sword.

"Yeah, yeah, I get it; I'm so sorry I'm a white male hegemonist."
And what does that make me?

I'm afraid that some people have that response to a much greater extent, but they don't get over it.

I ought to read Ancillary Sword next so that you can!

Very pleased (but not at all surprised :)) to hear that I have recommended good books for you! I found the pronoun thing in Ancillary Justice culturally and linguistically fascinating, and surprisingly eye-opening. And much less distracting than I might have expected.

I really must read more N.K. Jemisin. I love her novel The Killing Moon to pieces.
