Sounds and letters

Once upon a time, Man could not read and write. And every child of Man born into this world learns to talk before learning to read and write. Literacy is a wonderful thing, but learning to read and write (at least, the way we do it) makes learning about language more difficult.

Would you prefer pictograms? It is true that two of the most difficult things about learning English are spelling and vocabulary. Then there are dialects within the labguage. My father, a petroleum geologist & petroleum engineer, was once showing his boss, a "high" Bostonian, around a drilling site. Mr. Peabody attempted to have a friendly exchange with one of the crew "roughnecks" who was from either Kentucky or parts futher south. As my dad and Mr. P walked away, Mr. P. asked my father, "How do you understand what these people are saying?" When my dad returned to the crew member, that fellow said to him, "Was that fellow French? I didn't understand a word he said."
