Carey struggled in finding her voice and her style. It's clear to me that reading her Kushiel's Legacy is also reading her emerging voice as a writer.

See, I loved the voice in the first book--it grabbed me immediately and I was enthralled, and totally enjoyed being in Phaedre's head. I was never as absorbed by Imriel, nor did he ever feel quite as real to me. This could also be a general function of my not being that interested in male protagonists as a general rule...
