Disney Schmaltz

One of the fun things about having a toddler (and a Netflicks subscription) is revisiting all the old Disney animated films one by one. The early ones are really awful. I guess Snow White and Sleeping Beauty are okay, but Alice in Wonderland and Pinocchio are disturbing, Dumbo is about humiliation and violence, Bambi is of course about the death of ( Read more... )

Yes, yes, and yes.
Had I the energy I might say more, but you already said it.
Do you remember, when we were inhigh school how people didn't like or approve of the "newer" Disney style? Alladin in particular comes to mind.

I'm torn between having my kids watch the classics and not being able to stand them and the messages laced within them. (I love NetFlix for teh easy option).

Duck loves "Finding Nemo's Daddy"

I love the Disney Hunchback, too. When it came out, my kids were 13, 12, 9, and 6, and I used Frollo as an example for me to explain the evil of hypocrisy.

If I didn't already think you were awesome, this post would definitely seal the deal. Hunchback has some of the best music of any Disney movie. I have the piano sheet music, and when I was in high school and (quite often) mad at the world, there was nothing quite like playing "Heaven's Light/Hellfire" for working out my frustration. "Hellfire" has some truly rocking chords that require every finger on both hands and some serious pounding on the keys.

I haven't watched Hunchback in years; now I really want to.

Hunchback is my favorite old-school Disney musical too, for all the reasons you mention. I thought I was the only one!

My favorite of the new Disney movies is Mulan, but I also like The Little Mermaid (though it's kind of a sexist disaster), Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King... Never seen Pocahontas or Hunchback though.
