This fic has me so conflicted! On the one hand, it's Arthur/Eames and HP, which are two of my faves. On the other, it's Arthur and Eames as Death Eaters, which was hard for me to read. The sad thing is that it's not really even much of a stretch; they're not exactly paradigms of virtue in canon. Issues of morality aside, though, I really enjoyed it.
The art is really amazing, too. For some reason, I LOVE Eames's eyebrow most of all.
Honestly, it was hard for me to write too. I'm really not a fan of the Death Eaters at all (I mean, a lot of them are great villans, but I find it hard to even empathize with them when reading the books-- plus I'm a James/Sirius shipper, and Lupin is my fav character). I never even found them all that interesting, TBH, until I watched Deathly Hallows Part 1 and saw them all at the meeting with Voldemort, and I was like, "holy crap, most of these people look TERRIFIED", and I started thinking about young dumb cocky kids getting in over their heads, and what induces people who aren't just inherently Very Bad People™ to get involved in really bad causes and do horrible things.
I had never thought anyone would write them as Death Eaters! What a risk you took, writing them as bad men! I LOVE IT WHEN PEOPLE WRITE BAD MEN. And your description of Arthur, as if he were not a man but a curse, was fucking fantastic.
This throws HP AUs into a whole new light for me, I love it!
Thanks so much! I was nervous about it, definitely. Was a challenge to write characters I loved so much doing something so unambiguously awful. But I wanted to write an HP AU that I hadn't seen done before, and one where they weren't necessarily good guys, so...this :D
Oh wow, I was waiting for this fic since you mentioned it on twitter and you did not disappoint! Like the others, it was a little hard to read them as Death Eaters, but... yeah, it fits!
I think you got Eames-as-a-Slytherin's personality really, really clearly. I can totally see why he made the choices he did, and how he brought along Arthur only to have him take up the cause more fervently. How tragic. And it looks like Eames is planning to go down fighting? *le sigh* Sad, but very very good!
This broke my heart darling - less for what happened to Arthur than what happened to Eames. Oh to be trapped in his regrets and his memories - the loss of all that potential. It's like a punch to my solar plexus.
You did a brilliant job here and I am so pleased I could help in whatever limited way I could <3
Thank you! I'm glad it was powerful. I felt much worse for Eames too. I do think he would have done things differently were he given another chance and now it's too late. He was just sort of lost and foolish and naive. I didn't have a definite backstory for Arthur planned out, but I imagined him being lonely but also sort of entitled and spoiled, used to having things his way, finding everyday life not dangerous or exciting enough for him...so all the way through I sort of felt less bad for him. Nor do I really know if Arthur regretted anything. I do like to think he did and he just threw himself even more zealously into the cause because he was in denial and knew he couldn't leave anyway so he tried to convince himself he was fine and happy. But who knows. Poor, silly, stupid boys.
