There are nights when I come home, where Jacoby is sleeping in my spot. I pick him, carry him to his bed, and he sleepily responds to my endearments, "Good night Jacoby." "...good night Daddy." "I love you." "...I love you too."
This is one of moments that distills for me what it means to be a father.

Alex's nightlight on his room is his lavalamp, which means it needs to be turned off in the middle of the night. Every night, when it's my bedtime, I tiptoe into his room to shut it off. He almost always turns over and sleepily mutters, "Thanks, mama, I love you." I softly kiss his forehead and tell him I love him too. He almost never remembers this exchange the next day.
It's one of my favorite moments with him.

In the case of Jacoby, it's just easy. He's such a sweet kid that I want to do right by him in everything I do.
I cannot imagine what this would have been like if I had become a father in my 20s. Likely the results would have been much different.
And if Zoe had been my first it would have been much more difficult, as she has all the piss and vinegar normally found in three kids ;)
