I liked someone and vice versa, but things didn't work out and they found someone else. We talked all the time, mostly as friends in the beginning but it eventually escalated into flirting,etc...and it was an everyday type of thing.He was one of those that really had an effect on me, and i really value our friendship and would hate to just throw it

This is one of those times where honesty is the best route to go. Tell him that you miss talking to him and having him around.

Friendship is a nice thing to have, but if you're looking for something more, then you can't be afraid of a certain outcome. A greater risk promises a greater reward.

Right now, no i just want his friendship. I just miss talking to him everyday even though its only been a week since we have.

In the back of my mind i'm holding out hope that something might eventually happen, if not i'm fine with staying friends with him.

Depending on how well you know each other, I'd say wait a least awhile, and awhile could be anywhere from a few days to a few weeks. Honestly, guys are all different - as people tend to be - so it's hard to "guess" what he wants. My best suggestion is for you to keep in mind that if he truly wanted the friendship as much as you do, this wouldn't be a huge struggle. He would put in the effort to make things easier between you too, just like you're putting in effort. If you feel it's an uphill battle the whole way, just forget about him. Sounds harsh, I know, but it's better to care about someone who cares about you just as much. So long story short, watch how he behaves and how it makes you feel. Friendship should be a happy thing, and if this isn't making you happy...no matter how great the guy is, you should let him go, at least for now.
