It is, I think, the sheer visibility that changes things, if only for a brief spate. Earthquakes, hurricanes, tsunamis, they move us to generosity because today, the devastation they leave in their wakes can be brought to our television and computer screens in high-definition gory, complete with telegenic anchors (say, Anderson Cooper) rescuing ( Read more... )

This is very good - I've nothing really to add. One thing: the focus seems to be exclusively on broadcast media ("beamed to us in the comfort", etc.), which is fair enough, seeing as most people get their news from there. But I would at least very briefly mention print media, particularly the newspapers - the coverage in the centre-left papers was very strong in the aftermath of Haiti. It just seems kind of odd to leave them out.
