Lots of stimulants come in generics, and if you can't afford a psychiatrist, a GP is allowed to write the prescriptions.

I just got a month's supply of Ritalin for $14 at Target. Adderall XR (extended-release) would have been probably 20x that. So when you do talk to someone about meds, remind them you're uninsured so they will try all the cheaper options first.

I also keep using short acting ritalin for that reason, the XR medications are usually much more expensive.

All I can say is that Ritalin turned my life around and I wish that I had had my diagnosis and my prescription looong ago.

A lot of the major drug companies have prescription assistance programs. If you qualify (being uninsured, perhaps with some income restrictions), these can help you get free or reduced-cost medications. If you end up with an ADHD diagnosis (or some other dx) and decide to try medication, look into these programs with the manufacturer of the name-brand drug.

Good luck with the evaluation process, and I hope you find much success!
