ADD and driving

Does anyone else have trouble with driving? I was only diagnosed a month and a half ago, at age 36. I have never been able to get my driver's license. I have had my permit  several times, but everyone I know just thinks I am so weird that I can't drive. They think I am being stubborn in not doing it. Everytime I drive it is beyond nervewracking for ( Read more... )

I *can* drive but opt to only do it if I have too. So, I only drive to work and to school, and my friends/family drive everywhere else. It's kind of funny to me since I have the oldest car out of all of my friends and the least mileage.

I did learn late though. 18ish? And I still manage to get lost easily. But everything else I'm good with.

And hey this might sound rude so I apologize in advance but I'm glad you know your limitations and opt to stay off the road. I think the world would be a whole hell of a lot better place if a lot of people (regardless of what you are/have) acknowledged the fact they shouldn't drive. I've had farrrrr too many close calls on the road lately with distracted drivers.

And, FWIW, I don't think people who opt not to drive are weird at all.

29 and can't drive..i had my permit about or 5 times and it just never worked out. i went to a driving school but got kicked out and almost wrecked my friend's car (an Audi!) by going 60 on a 25 and not even realizing the speed limit. :(

Same situation as you--I can't drive safely enough to trust myself on the road, because I can't pay attention to everything at once. It's possible I'd be able to drive with Adderall, since Adderall improves my working memory, but Adderall also makes me queasy as it wears off (even the XR).

Thanks everyone for the replies. It's so very helpful to know I am not the only one.

Just adding yet another comment from someone who can totally associate. I'm 26 and still haven't gotten my license yet because I just do not trust myself driving on anything more than a 2-lane road... there's just too much to keep track of, and my visual processing is slow/screwy enough to make it even more challenging. (And I don't feel so bad now about not having one at 26!)

I really wish the US in general had better public transportation. -_-
