They look an awful lot like lumberyard pencils, which you'd sharpen with a pocket knife. But that would waste a lot of nice crayony bits. Perhaps ruthless one-sided colouring binges! You could shade over newspaper articles that irritate you until you have a nice point.

I like this suggestion best of all! Except I would need to obtain a newspaper instead of scribbling on my laptop screen. I suppose I can do that.

(or use a sheet of the very same newsprint I draw on, but where's the fun?)

I was about to suggest sharpening them with a knife too but I have no idea how that would really work.

Having used a penknife to sharpen ordinary HB pencils, it takes patience, I can tell you, and practice.

Oh, that I have done, and I don't find it hard, but I seem to be good at that sort of task. Conté crayons are softer, though, which may make it easier to do with good control... but it might be hard to dial down your reflexes if you're used to sharpening harder things with a knife.

I figure it's worth trying!

Try using a large makeup pencil sharpener? There are extra-fat makeup pencils, and therefore there must be sharpeners that would fit a crayon.

Hmm. The crayons are square in cross-section, and kind of skinny. That would do odd things to the point.

Ah ... damn. In that case, I think sandpaper is probably the way to go for sharpening. Or you could avoid using the crayons for fine work and use pastel pencils instead, if you can find a close color match.
