>the plugs they sent me technically fit, but are too long to fit in the jacks. Also, the cable I got is hyooooge, it's way too thick
Oh, I've definitely had dates like that.
There's a neato plan somewhere out there for a cheap bombproof general power supply. Basically you take a standard ATX supply from a computer, short one pin to ground so the thing thinks it's plugged into a motherboard, then drill 5 holes in the PS case and put in 5 screw-in banana plug jacks, hooking them to the cable for +/- 5V and +/- 12V, and when you get done you have a nice, very high current, sealed-case general purpose PS for cheap.
teferi is planning to let me have/borrow on permanent loan one of his. I'm still waiting to get it from him. Meanwhile, I have a verrah nice 3.3V supply that I made myself for the chips that run on 3.3V. I was just being dumb about the board that doesn't.
the plugs they sent me technically fit, but are too long to fit in the jacks.
I hate it when that happens! (I have vague suspicions that my laptop power cable is not the OEM version for pretty much exactly that reason, though it does fit well enough to get power through)
In other news, I have an older (350 W) power supply sitting around that would probably work for what randomdreams was talking about. If you're interested, let me know, if not I'll probably try that project myself ^_^
Glad to hear that you didn't fry your board (though sorry to hear that it caused so much stress... reminds me of a certain phototransistor a month or two ago ~wry grin~ )
yeah, All Electronics was a fun place to poke around when I lived in the valley, but best not to depend too particularly on the mechanical characteristics of unseen surplus parts.
[Course, this leads to ordering random things on the chance they sound like they might be useful for a half baked project. Which is its own set of problems.)
