Tongs and rubber gloves are nearly quotidian around here, especially when cooking: thai chili. Yow.

Boiled In Vinegar is a pretty good band name.

Sounds better than "Discretionary Cheese," which I came up with at dinner tonight.

That sounds like a good song title.

A bit derivative of Boiled in Lead, though, innit?

Actually, knitted items tend to shrink more in one direction than the other - I forget if it's height or width that loses the most - I suspect height due to the structure of knitted fabric.

What are you actually trying to do, anyway? Am trying to picture it in my head from what you've said, and am failing. :)

why not hand felt it with hot soapy water? Based on what I've read, you'd take bubble wrap (the flat side) or a sushi mat, lay out the roving on it thinly - horizontally and vertically. Add hot water with a small amount of dish soap. Rub. Probably don't rub the edges that you want to join up. Wrap the now-felting-felt around your spherical frame. rub some more.

PS Agitation is more important than water heat, which may be why you're having trouble boiling it in a pot.
