I worked out a way to get from Vancouver to Seattle for $4.50--all on local bus service (plus a ferry if it's on a Saturday, since the Mt Vernon-Everett bus doesn't run, lulz). Takes 11 hours and 12 transfers, though.

(I miss Boston. :( )

Okay, wretchedly puzzled minds want to know: did you ever put that itinerary into practice? And how does it handle the border?

I haven't yet; I do plan to try someday, because it would be fun. (I have a strange, somewhat masochistic sense of fun, but.)

With the exception of the border, every transfer is direct; i.e. it happens right at the same location, no walking needed. There's a TransLink bus which goes to 8th Ave and King George Highway, about 2km from the border, and there's a WTA bus which picks you up in Blaine right on the other side. Basically, you get a nice walk through Peace Arch Park, and you have an hour and a half to walk 2km through the park and clear the pedestrian customs.

I've done this, only I did the walk via the beach from White Rock. Not sure whether I used the same TransLink stop.

On Saturday, you can still get to Mount Vernon without doing the Whidbey thing, via CT201/202, CT240, IT411C.

Hah! We might yet see you in Boston! Just make sure that you don't misread the (usually handwritten Chinese) destination sign and find yourself in Atlantic City instead -- this being a caution drawn from lived experience......

Ah.. then I see our trepidation about actually making our flight out of JFK wasn't completely without warrant. We were taking a chinatown bus* from {nameless truckstop) Baltimore to NYC because it saved us several hundred dollars on the plane tickets.

It worked out okay. We even manged to not lose ourselves too badly on the Helsinki public transit system during our 11 hour layover later that day** (and with less preparation and much less intelligible (to us) sinage).

*We actually took a different chinatown bus than the one we'd purchased tickets with because ours was late and we weren't certain that if we waited there'd be another one in a timely manner enough to get us there to wrestle public transit from chinatown to the airport (what with us having next to no combined experience with New York transit).

**We hadn't slept therefore it's later that day regardless of what the clock/calendar says.
