qotd: "channel setting is anal"

Very full weekend, mostly taken up by my stonesetting class at Danaca. Oooof.

Using 2mm cubic zirconia, I did one (bad) bead setting and one considerably better flush setting, though realized that the seats were too large in both cases (after starting the flush-setting seat with a much smaller bur, for fear of overshooting it again.) I don't quite ( Read more... )

Hm. In thinking about your comment, I think there's a lot of meaning imprinted on the piece, too. For instance, my absolute favorite chain in the whole wide world is this cheap one that was my grandmother's. I dunno what it is about it (was probably ordered out of a fingerhut catalog), but I think I'd grab it, were the building on fire.

Neat.

I have a couple of small faceted amethysts that could use setting in something, and I don't know if I'll ever be the one to do it. If you're interested, you can have them.

Ooh.

I am interested, though they'll need to wait for such time as I feel I can do justice to them.

No problem. They're not going anywhere.

Meanwhile, I am thinking of working up the nerve to see if Danaca will let me into any of their beginner-level classes. (It looks like mostly cold work with some soldering, and I know I can do that; it's just convincing them. :)

Good job resisting the sapphires! They sounded lovely and it will be a better purchase when you have some stonesetting time under your belt.

That's what I was thinking too... CZs are cheap, kind of frighteningly so when you factor in the labor, and they don't come with that feeling of "Aaagh, I better not fuck this up -- they're not exactly making more of these."

I really liked the roughness and thickness of the ring combined with the great job you did of insetting the tiny stones. I'm sure you'll deepen your skills in the class, but to my untutored eyes, it still looked really cool. And yay, snuggles!

thank you!

*purr*

taking compliments is hard, but it helps considerably that they're from people (you! and others) whose opinions I value in every other regard, so (says the internal logic) I ought to believe you here, too.
