je suis une fou

Home again. Up at 4:30 to catch a plane out of Oakland, the jolting end of a few days of languor, plenty, and sensible insulation. Sitting in the beginning of info440 and dreading same, as if that's a portent, or maybe I've just been reading too much about portents. (Definitely.) The 49 I was on to campus lost tire pressure near the Eastlake ( Read more... )

Name of the Rose is very unlike all other Umberto Eco that I've read. It is also by far my favorite work of his.

Those are the old tunnel buses, manufactured by Breda (of Italy) in 1990. Metro converted them to straight electric buses by removing the diesel engines, installing new interiors, and who knows what else? Naturally, being of Italian design, these buses are far less reliable than the 1987 MAN (of Germany) buses that they're replacing.

I suppose they look newer, at least.

The two primary reasons for KC Metro's reluctance to buy new trolley buses are:
(1) Their high cost relative to diesel buses; and
(2) An unspoken expectation that the entire trolleybus system will be eliminated within the next 7-10 years.

Company and the distribution of goodness are available here, but cascademiles is getting over a cold and thus would prefer not to risk the transmission of pathogens by attempting to feed his friends. However, cascademiles does crave Pho' or, even better, a pot of Tom Yum at Araya's.

I work in the building next to Araya's. I'd join you for dinner if you feel up to a bus trip.

or I could *bring* you Araya's. in a BOX.

At the moment, I'm quite fully ambulatory, and (amazingly) I've never been to Araya's new place. Name a time if you'd like -- no other commitments here!

Speaking of company and distribution of goodness, Amy, I was thinking that we should do cookies again this year. I volunteer to hold a cookie making/cookie swap (with tea!) at my house in December sometime... maybe the 15th?
I figure each person could bring 1 1/2-2 1/2 dozen - half a dozen for eating, and 1-2 dozen for trading with other people. Plus, like you did, we could make and decorate some too.

I really liked The Name of the Rose, but then I am a medievalist by inclination, love languages, and love getting little obscures references (when I get them, which I got just enough to keep me from being frustrated). But I thought it was a pretty hard slog and large parts of it were very obscure. Then I read Foucault's Pendulum. Ugh, it was worse. So you might like The Name better. Less on science and secret societies, more on monasticism, literature, and intellectual history, so maybe not, though. But it is better organized / more linear.
