The kettle was nearly warm enough for tea, and the main room was nearly tidy, when Juliet heard the knock at her door. She set the broom against the wall near the entryway to the kitchen and flew to the door, opening it without checking first to see who it was for the first time in months.

"Sango." She started to smile, taking in the image of her sister holding a kitten, and the proud mother cat at the woman's feet, but the look on said woman's face changed her look to one of concern. "Come in, please. The tea is nearly ready."

She didn't want to ask right away, but the question of, 'what is wrong?' hung in the air as she stepped back to let the other woman inside.

"Mm. Thanks again," she said quietly with a smile that wasn't all there, following Juliet inside. For a moment she stopped to wonder what she thought she was doing, dragging Juliet into this. And then she realized it was because she couldn't do it alone, and she knew it.

And maybe, for once, Juliet deserved to know what was going on.

(And maybe, for once, she was a little too upset to care much about being selfish.)

She could feel the question in the air, but she was too awkward to know where to start. She pulled Kou a little tighter to her front as the kitten yawned and stirred briefly.

So she swallowed hard and blurted it out. "You know--that Riku and I..."

And she trailed off, feeling her shoulders tense.

"As I said, you are always welcome in our - my home." Hers, now. Even with all the changes she'd been making, she still thought of it in terms of both herself and Tybalt.

She shut the door against the cold and turned toward the other woman, in time to catch the swallow and tension. She felt herself tense as well. Something to do with Riku. And Sango was upset. She stepped closer, putting one hand on Sango's shoulder and another on her back, between her shoulder blades.

"Riku had told me that you and he were lovers," she said. Lovers, of course, by Juliet's definition of the word - two people who loved one another.

Something passed across Sango's face at recognition that Juliet was alone now. She thought about inviting the girl to Riku's house--and then realized that being alone was probably better than being stuck in the middle of all the tension ( ... )
