Hope is the first thing one should discard when Lucifer is involved, of course. He finds Castiel almost by mistake, but fortunately the day before has worn him down enough that his anger is simply motivation and not controlling him.

"Let me guess. Bandages for Rei?"

Castiel wasn't really startled by the sudden voice, though that Lucifer was speaking first and not just acting immediately was more surprising. Turning to face his brother, putting the salvaged supplies into the pocket of his jacket, he gave a small nod.

He was trying to control his temper, his brain reminding him he was mortal now, and he couldn't afford to anger Lucifer the way he might've been able to as an angel. But the rest of him was simply furious, and that combined to prompt him to speak, albeit in a much more neutral way than he was feeling.

"Why did you attack her?"

"Because she has never wanted peace with me. She's a soldier, Castiel. It wouldn't matter to her if I crawled back to our father on my knees; she needs something to fight. And here, that's me." He's still pacing around Castiel, unable to be still ever since being caught.

"She was a step away from launching an attack as it was. She was inches from me, the opportunity for her was too good. You know if I had really wanted to kill her, I would have." And now he does, but that's beside the point.

He pauses only to look at his brother. "She had been saving that attack for a reason. It wasn't for a rainy day--it was for when she needed to feel like she could knock me down a peg. It has always been about her pride. You know that. Did you know, when I first met her, I told her to run instead of fighting? She did--it's needled at her ever since. That's what this is really about. Her excuses and explanations are all just icing."

He was quiet, watching Lucifer pace around, turning in time to keep facing him. His eyes narrowed at the explanation, which sounded a whole lot like justification and excuses to him instead of an actual answer, and it took effort to refrain from speaking until Lucifer had finished. He hadn't known that part about running, but it didn't matter to him; Lucifer was wrong and he was going to let him know how much so.

"No. If it had been about her pride, she would've killed you with the fire instead of trapping you. She's capable of it." He stated coldly, evenly. "She was protecting herself, and that was all, because you decided to bring it to a fight. I want to know why."
